Kidney Transplant: Sandra's Story
"As I recuperated in the hospital in the days after surgery, I could not have been more impressed with the care I was given from the entire medical staff."

Sandra, pictured with her husband, Larry, underwent a kidney transplant at UW Hospital in 2006.
"On December 21, 2006, after more than 15 years with failing kidneys and three years of waiting on organ donation lists, I received the gift of life.
Every day I reflect on my transplant experience at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics in Madison. My pre-transplant and post-transplant coordinators have been there every step of the way, patiently answering questions and providing the education and information that I needed.
When I received the call that a kidney had become available for me, I was very excited and nervous. From the moment I arrived on the transplant floor, I knew everything would be OK. This peace of mind was given to me by the nursing staff and their support staff. They truly are angels.
As the surgery hour approached, I met the surgical staff and my surgeon. I know now that I was in the very best hands. He was the greatest, and gave me the assurance that I needed. He's the very kind, personable and experienced surgeon you hope for when you are facing surgery of this nature.
As I recuperated in the hospital in the days after surgery, I could not have been more impressed with the care I was given from the entire medical staff.
Once I was released from the hospital to continue my recovery at home, the care continued. From the follow-up phone calls to the follow-up physician visits, labs and procedures, the medical and support staff was still there for my husband and me, always answering questions and providing guidance in the areas in which we had concerns.
As each day passes, I look back on my total transplant experience remembering the medical staff for their compassion, caring and knowledge. Our time spent at the UW Hospital will remain a memorable time of our lives. I give thanks for my surgeon (and his staff), and the care and concern from my nursing staff and my post-transplant coordinator, who always take the time to guide me through the education process in my post-operative recovery.
I can highly recommend the UW Health Transplant Program at the University of Wisconsin."
