About

Dr. Majid Afshar is one of the lead scientists in the data science lab. He is an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Allergy, Pulmonary, and Critical Care at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Dr. Afshar received his medical degree and internal medicine training from Rush Medical College, and then completed his master of science degree in Research Methods and Epidemiology, clinical fellowship, and an NIH research fellowship at University of Maryland. He is board certified in pulmonary medicine, critical care medicine, and clinical informatics.

Majid works closely with hospital informatics to improve health outcomes and healthcare delivery. He joined the faculty at the Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine in 2014 and then was recruited to the University of Wisconsin in 2020. He now co-leads the Department of Medicine Data Science Lab with Matt Churpek.  Majid has led several quality improvements projects in improving outcomes in critically ill patients focused on early detection and monitoring. His previous Loyola data analytics laboratory had a focus in using natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning for high throughput computable phenotypes and applied predictive modeling from the EHR. Past projects include: 1) developing and validating a model for screening substance misuse in hospitalized patients; 2) helping Loyola perform NLP with conversion of all clinical notes from the data warehouse into standardized medical vocabularies for machine learning activities; 3) developing a risk prediction model for acute respiratory distress syndrome in burn patients; 4) biomarker development and validation for screening alcohol misuse in trauma patients.

Majid is a steering committee member of the American Medical Informatics Association Clinical Decision Support working group. He has previously served on study sections for the Department of Defense on pre-applications for sepsis-related respiratory failure and the Biomedical Computing and Health Informatics study section.
