Lisa Nackers-Schmidt, PhD, MPH is a clinical health psychologist at UW Health. She helps patients cope with chronic health conditions such as diabetes, sleep apnea and cardiovascular (heart) disease. She specializes in people with obesity and those who are undergoing bariatric (medical weight management) surgery.
Working with bariatric surgery patients, Lisa sees first-hand how medical weight loss treatment can improve all areas of life. Many of her patients can manage and even eliminate their co-existing chronic health conditions, allowing them to do the things they’ve always wanted to do.
Lisa believes in viewing each patient as a whole person. In addition to learning their medical background, she takes time to get to know their social, emotional and lifestyle history as well. She allows her patients to set their own goals and works with them to develop an optimal care plan with the best chances for long-term success.
When not treating patients, Lisa conducts research focusing on food insecurity and patients going through bariatric surgery.
Outside of the clinic, Lisa enjoys spending time with her two young daughters, as well as running, hiking, playing volleyball and biking.
I love seeing my patients really take charge of their lives — investing their time and energy into making themselves the best they can possibly be.
Dr. Nackers' research interests include factors associated with weight change and long-term weight maintenance, group dynamics in health behavior change and food insecurity.
