About

Erica Knavel Koepsel, MD, is a UW Health radiologist and assistant professor in the Department of Radiology at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. Dr. Knavel Koepsel cares for children and adults with various disorders using guided-imaging procedures. She has special clinical interests in women’s health and ablation therapies.

Dr. Knavel Koepsel performs uterine artery embolization (blocking blood vessels) for uterine fibroids (noncancerous tumors) and diagnoses and treats pelvic congestion syndrome (chronic pelvic pain). She also performs CT and MRI-guided interventions for malignant (cancerous) and benign (noncancerous) tumors. Her other interests include complex inferior vena cava (IVC) filter removals and treatments for lymphatic diseases.

Dr. Knavel Koepsel believes clear, open communication with patients is essential for optimal care. She meets with her patients before procedures to make them feel comfortable, explains procedures in plain language with drawings and addresses their concerns.

In addition to her clinical practice and teaching role, Dr. Knavel Koepsel conducts clinical outcomes research on ablation therapies that use heat or cold to destroy tumors.

In her free time, Dr. Knavel Koepsel enjoys practicing yoga, traveling and hiking with her family.
