Adam Bauer, MD

Adam Bauer, MD, is a UW Health Kids neonatologist and an associate professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. He provides high-quality care to premature and critically ill infants of all gestational ages and is dedicated to helping families understand the care their babies receive around the time of birth.

Dr. Bauer works closely with Fetal Cardiology to support expecting parents whose fetus has been diagnosed with congenital heart disease. In collaboration with this interdisciplinary team, he helps families create individualized delivery plans that support safe neonatal resuscitation, outline neonatal pre-surgical care and provide guidance on what the first months of life may hold. His clinical focus includes improving birth planning and early resuscitation for neonates with congenital heart disease and enhancing care for infants with prenatally suspected coarctation of the aorta. Through these efforts, he has helped increase family bonding time while maintaining safe monitoring in the newborn nursery.

Dr. Bauer’s research interests center on point of care ultrasound and the care of neonates with congenital heart disease. His collaborative research also examines feeding regimens for preterm neonates with congenital heart disease, the timing of transfer to American Family Children’s Hospital to reduce the risk of intraventricular hemorrhage during transport and strategies to improve the successful placement of central umbilical lines in this patient population.

An advocate at heart, Dr. Bauer believes engagement in advocacy is essential for pediatricians. He routinely supports parental voter registration efforts and advocates for gun violence prevention as part of his commitment to the health and safety of children and families.
