Supported by the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, our program is staffed by top-ranked physicians in maternal-fetal medicine, neonatology, NICU hospitalists and various pediatric specialties.
Emergency transport of neonates to our NICUs is provided by our critical care ground and air transport teams.
Our care team includes:
Neonatologists: Physicians with special training in caring for premature babies and babies in need of complex care.
Pediatric surgeons: Physicians with special training in performing surgery on newborns.
Subspecialty physicians: Physicians with expertise in any of a number of medical specialties and conditions, called in to provide care recommendations as necessary.
NICU hospitalists: Pediatricians who work exclusively in the NICU, working closely with neonatologists and other members of the care team.
Residents and fellows: Physicians training for service in neonatology and in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
Neonatal nurse practitioners: Advanced practice nurses with specialized training who work with the neonatologists and nursing staff in providing critical care to infants in the NICU.
Nursing staff: Registered nurses specially trained to care for premature and sick infants. If a baby is in the NICU for a long period of time, a small group of nurses will take primary responsibility for the infant's nursing care and teach the parents and caregivers prior to taking the baby home.
Respiratory therapists: Providers with expertise in treating newborns with lung problems.
Health psychologists: Mental health professionals who help families cope with the stress of their stay at the hospital.
Child Life specialists: Certified Child Life Specialists help children, adolescents and families cope with the fear and anxiety associated with the medical environment and hospitalization.
