Amy Peterson, MD

Amy Peterson, MD, is a pediatric cardiologist at UW Health and the director of the Pediatric Preventive Cardiology Clinic at UW Health American Family Children’s Hospital. She treats children born with heart conditions or those at risk for heart disease.

Dr. Peterson considers the whole family when it comes to helping a child become healthier. She views every patient as unique and carefully develops care plans that work for children and their families. Dr. Peterson has a special interest in treating children with abnormal cholesterol levels, a family history of early heart attacks or strokes, and other medical conditions that put them at a higher risk of a heart attack or stroke at a younger age.

As an associate professor at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, Department of Pediatrics, Dr. Peterson’s research focuses on ways to make it easier to identify children with high cholesterol. Because children with this condition don’t feel sick, doctors often aren’t aware that a child’s cholesterol might be high. Her research team looks at ways to make cholesterol testing easier for children. She also looks at ways to improve treatment for children with high cholesterol.

When not working, Dr. Peterson enjoys traveling, reading and spending time with her family.
