Acerca de
Michael Rickels, OD, is a UW Health optometrist. He cares for patients of all ages and focuses on helping people maintain healthy vision. He works closely with experts to support patients with both routine and complex needs.
Dr. Rickels provides comprehensive eye exams and has a strong interest in caring for people with glaucoma, a long-term condition that can damage the optic nerve and affect sight. He works side by side with ophthalmologists to monitor this disease and guide patients through treatment. He also enjoys diagnosing and managing a wide range of eye conditions and uses his residency training every day to help patients get the clearest and most comfortable vision possible.
In his approach to care, Dr. Rickels believes that listening is one of the most important parts of every visit. He takes time to explain each diagnosis and treatment plan in simple, clear language, so patients understand what is happening with their eyes and what to expect next. He involves patients in decision making by discussing options, whether that includes medication, surgery, or other treatments. Using advanced eye imaging technology, he shows patients how the structure of their eyes relates to how they see, helping them feel confident and informed. Dr. Rickels hopes each patient leaves knowing they have a partner in their care and that they can continue living their lives with the best vision possible.
Outside of work, Dr. Rickels enjoys spending time with his family, especially his daughter Isabelle. He loves being outdoors and enjoying water activities such as paddle boarding and boating. He also spends time at his family’s lake house, where he enjoys fishing and being on the water. These activities help him stay grounded and bring balance to his busy clinical life, giving him energy and joy that he brings back to the care of his patients.
