Matthew Caldis, MD, is a UW Health doctor specializing in gastroenterology (digestive system disorders) and hepatology (liver, gallbladder, pancreatic and biliary tract diseases). He’s also a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. Dr. Caldis cares for patients with a variety of gastrointestinal (GI) conditions, including esophagus, stomach and intestinal problems. With a clinical focus on inflammatory bowel disease, he treats patients with Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. These disorders cause chronic (ongoing) irritation in the GI tract. Dr. Caldis also performs procedures such as colonoscopies and endoscopies to prevent, diagnose and treat digestive tract concerns. As a believer in patient-centered care, Dr. Caldis strives to help people improve their quality of life. He values his patients’ unique perspectives and prioritizes active listening to understand their needs. He takes time to discuss different treatment options with his patients before supporting them in making informed decisions about their health. In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Caldis recruits patients for clinical trials that study inflammatory bowel disease. Outside of work, Dr. Caldis enjoys spending time with his family and cheering on the Badgers as well as sports teams from his native Minnesota. I hope that my patients leave my office feeling informed about their diagnosis and confident in their next steps.
