Jonathan Gehlbach, MD, is a UW Health Kids pediatric critical care medicine doctor and an associate professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health where he is involved in teaching future doctors and improving patient safety and hospital systems.
Dr. Gehlbach specializes in caring for children who are critically ill or experiencing serious health problems. These can include injuries from accidents, severe infections, or chronic illnesses that suddenly get worse. He also helps children who need machines to breathe or medicines to support their heart and blood pressure.
Dr. Gehlbach believes in teamwork and compassion. He knows that being in the ICU can be one of the hardest times for a child and their family. He works closely with nurses, doctors and especially families to make sure everyone understands the care plan and feels supported. He listens carefully to parents and guardians, knowing they are the most important part of the care team.
Outside of work, Dr. Gehlbach enjoys spending time with his family. He likes playing and watching sports, making music and joining in whatever activities his kids are doing. He recently moved back to Madison and is excited to be part of the UW Health community again.
My hope for every child is to leave the ICU healthier than when they arrived. Even when that’s not possible, I want every family to know we did everything we could with respect and care.
