J. Louis Hinshaw, MD, is a UW Health radiologist and professor in the Departments of Radiology and Urology at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. Dr. Hinshaw specializes in abdominal imaging and ablations to diagnose and treat a variety of health conditions. Dr. Hinshaw often works with other UW Health specialists across different areas of medicine. He interprets CT scans, ultrasound images and other imaging technologies to diagnose diseases and disorders affecting the kidneys, liver and lungs. He also performs minimally invasive, image-guided procedures to treat cancerous and noncancerous tumors, cysts, diseased tissue and abnormal blood vessel growths. When Dr. Hinshaw performs procedures, he explains the process, including potential benefits and risks. He believes that clear education and open communication help resolve important questions or concerns. He wants patients to be fully informed, so they understand and feel comfortable with their treatment choices. In addition to clinical practice and teaching, Dr. Hinshaw conducts leading-edge research. Recent areas of focus include studying the use and potential applications of histotripsy — a non-invasive, ultrasound-focused approach to treating abnormal tissues. In his free time, Dr. Hinshaw enjoys golfing, playing basketball, traveling and downhill skiing. Patients are at the center of what we do.
