About

Hrissanthi (Chris) Ikonomidou, MD, is a UW Health Kids pediatric neurologist. She is also a physician-researcher, professor and the chief of the Division of Pediatric Neurology in the Department of Neurology at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health.

Dr. Ikonomidou treats newborns, infants and older children with a wide range of neurologic problems — conditions that affect the brain, spinal cord and nerves. These include brain injuries, tumors, seizures, epilepsy, tics (sudden twitches) and other movements disorders, cerebral palsy, diseases of muscles and nerves and many genetic diseases. She also treats children with headaches and inflammatory conditions that impair neurologic functions.

Fascinated with the young brain’s potential to heal, Dr. Ikonomidou focuses her research on new ways to restore or improve brain function in children with injuries and cognitive (thinking and reasoning) disorders. She also studies the impact of injuries, lack of oxygen and medications on the brain and investigates new therapies.

Dr. Ikonomidou takes time to get to know her young patients and listens to the concerns of their parents and caregivers. Her goal is to help children live long, healthy lives to the best of their abilities.

During her free time, Dr. Ikonomidou enjoys hiking, traveling, reading, gardening and playing piano.

I work to make a positive difference in the lives of children with challenging brain and spine disorders — and help them live their best possible quality of life.
