Elizabeth Burnside, MD, MPH, MS, FACR, FSBI

Elizabeth “Beth” Burnside, MD, is a UW Health radiologist who specializes in breast cancer imaging and a professor in the Department of Radiology at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. She works with a wide team of experts to support patients through breast screening, diagnosis and follow up care. Dr. Burnside is also involved in research that explores how computer science, including machine learning and artificial intelligence, can help improve breast cancer detection and patient care.

Dr. Burnside cares for people who come to the clinic with questions or concerns about breast health. Many of her patients are women over age forty who have been recalled after a screening mammogram or who have noticed a breast change. She also sees men who experience breast problems. Her work includes diagnosing many conditions, from common benign concerns to early breast cancer. She explains imaging tests in clear, simple language and helps patients understand the next steps. In her research and clinical practice, she stays engaged with new technologies that support early detection and more precise diagnosis.

Dr. Burnside believes strongly in listening to her patients and working in partnership with them. She understands that many people feel worried when they come to the Breast Center and she takes the time to learn what each person needs. She values honesty, optimism and clear communication. She also believes every patient should feel supported by the entire care team, which includes technologists, nurses, radiologists, pathologists, surgeons and oncologists. She sees patient care as a continual learning process and feels that each encounter teaches her something important.

Outside of work, Dr. Burnside enjoys activities that help her stay active and support her well-being. She bikes to work, practices yoga and has enjoyed running in the past. Exercise plays a key role in her life and helps her maintain balance and mental health.
