David Al-Adra, MD, PhD, FACS, FRCSC, is a UW Health transplant surgeon. He is also an assistant professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. Dr. Al-Adra treats children and adults who need kidney, liver or pancreas transplants due to liver cancer or other conditions. Dr. Al-Adra treats cirrhosis (permanent scarring of the liver) and other diseases affecting the liver and bile ducts. He also cares for patients with diabetes, end-stage kidney failure and related complications. Dr. Al-Adra collaborates with multiple specialists to evaluate patients before transplant surgery to ensure it’s their best treatment option. He performs transplant procedures, working with specialized surgical and post-transplant teams to provide comprehensive care. Dr. Al-Adra is skilled in open and laparoscopic (minimally invasive) surgeries, including laparoscopic procedures to remove a kidney or part of the liver from live organ donors. He also performs complex liver surgeries requiring blood vessel reconstruction. In addition to surgical care, Dr. Al-Adra researches ways to improve liver transplant approaches and results. His team studies liver and immune system interaction and post-transplant organ rejection. In his free time, Dr. Al-Adra enjoys swimming, biking and spending time with his family. I treat people who can have very complex conditions. I enjoy solving problems and doing my absolute best to help them meet their goals and get better.
