About

Charles Shahan, MD, is an acute care surgeon at UW Health and an assistant professor for the Department of Surgery at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health.

As a surgeon, Dr. Shahan provides care for trauma, surgical critical care, and emergency general surgery patients. Dr. Shahan’s patient care philosophy focuses on ensuring his patients get what they need physically and emotionally at the right time. Working as a team, physicians, medical assistants, nurses and other vital staff monitor the patient’s progress even after discharge to improve quality of life during recovery.

Dr. Shahan’s research interests include diagnosing and treating mental health conditions such as stress disorders and depression after trauma and emergency general surgery.

Listening to patients is vital to providing care in a patient-centered way. Just getting to know people is a real pleasure — understanding who they are outside the clinical setting and making a connection. That’s one of the most valuable parts of being a doctor.
