Bruce Klein, MD, is a UW Health Kids pediatric infectious disease doctor. He’s also a tenured professor and researcher at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health in the Department of Pediatrics, Division of Infectious Diseases, where he serves as the division chief. Dr. Klein treats children who develop challenging infections due to bacteria, fungi, viruses and parasites. These infections can be rare and life-threatening. Some of his patients develop fever, rash and other symptoms after traveling out of the country. He also treats children fighting infections because their immune systems are weak due to cancer, autoimmune diseases or organ transplants. Fascinated by medical puzzles, Dr. Klein works to figure out what causes each patient’s infection and identify the right treatment. He talks with patients and families, listens closely and takes an extensive history. He assures worried parents that he’ll do everything possible to help their child get better. To discover new ways to fight infections, Dr. Klein researches how fungi invade the human body and how the immune system fights back. During his free time, Dr. Klein enjoys swimming and running. I work to find cures for life-threatening infections. My hope for our patients is that they recover and return to the lives they enjoy.
