About

Andrew Spiel, MD, is a UW Health gastroenterologist and an assistant professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology.

He offers colorectal cancer screenings and treats a range of digestive and gastrointestinal (GI) disorders, from polyps and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) to colon cancer. His primary focus is on metabolic health problems and obesity.

Dr. Spiel specializes in endoscopic care. He uses minimally invasive instruments and imaging technologies such as colonoscopies and upper and lower endoscopies to evaluate and treat digestive tract disorders. Dr. Spiel performs advanced endoscopic procedures for medical weight management and obesity treatment, including endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty and intragastric balloon therapy.

Dr. Spiel chose to focus on metabolic and obesity medicine after seeing how many chronic conditions stem from obesity. He addresses metabolic problems or related disorders that can contribute to weight management challenges.

In addition to his clinical and faculty work, Dr. Spiel researches the outcomes of endoscopic bariatric surgery and revision procedures.

In his free time, Dr. Spiel enjoys exploring with his children and being outdoors, swimming, biking and cross-country skiing.

I want to create a safe and encouraging environment. I practice shared decision-making and make decisions with my patients to help them achieve their goals.
