Environmental Services Department Named Best in Nation
Madison, Wisconsin - The Environmental Services Department (ESD) at University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics has been named the best in the nation by the Association for Healthcare Environment (AHE) and Health Facilities Management, the official magazine of the American Hospital Association.
The sixth annual ES Department of the Year award recognizes the outstanding achievements of leading-edge hospital ESD/housekeeping teams in maintaining the highest levels of performance in 13 critical areas, including:
- Patient satisfaction
- Patient safety initiatives
- Infection control and prevention
- Waste reduction and recycling initiatives
- Staff education and training
- Use of advanced technologies to improve efficiency
“As hospitals around the country continue to focus on ways to improve patient safety, we are proud to be recognized as a national leader in that regard,” says Tom Peck, UW Hospital’s director of environmental services. “Patient safety and satisfaction is always our main goal, and we work hard every day to make sure that we continue to set the standard.”
UW Hospital and Clinics was recognized for a number of successful initiatives, including an innovative training program in which new ESD employees are videotaped in a simulated patient room to evaluate how they clean and disinfect surfaces. The ESD team was also commended for using fluorescent marking gel as a tool for measuring how well the staff does in cleaning the top 10 highly-touched surfaces in patient rooms and bathrooms.
Other notable accomplishments include the department’s deployment of an ultraviolet pulsed-light machine to disinfect all patient room surfaces in the pulmonary and cardiothoracic surgery units and significant gains in reducing regulated and non-regulated waste streams (the hospital recycled more than 456 tons of materials in 2011).
Judges picked by Health Facilities Management and AHE selected UW Hospital and Clinics for the top award after reviewing detailed applications from more than 30 of the nation’s top hospitals and health systems. The award will be presented to Peck at the AHE conference in Phoenix later this month.
