There is no shortage of skin care products out there, promising to address concerns tied to aging skin. To help you determine which products are the best options for your skin care goals, we list our favorite skin care ingredients to help you achieve healthy, vibrant-looking skin at any age:

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is an antioxidant that works to correct and protect the skin. It protects the skin from free-radical damage that we're exposed to daily - like sun, smoke and pollution. It also is a required cofactor in collagen synthesis, so it helps to build collagen (the fibers in our skin that give it firmness).

Oral doses of vitamin C are not enough to give this type of protection and anti-aging benefits so a topical serum or cream is needed.

Recommended product: SkinCeuticals CE Ferulic is a serum that provides a triple antioxidant treatment with 15% pure L-ascorbic vitamin C, 1% vitamin E and 0.5% ferulic acid ($162.00* at UW Health Transformations Jeune Skin Care).

Alpha Hydroxy Acids

Fruit acids such as glycolic, lactic and malic acids work to exfoliate the epidermis, thus smoothing texture, softening fine lines and improving penetration of your other skin care ingredients, such as vitamin C and growth factors. Alpha hydroxy acids can be found in cleansers, toners and creams.

Recommended products: SkinCeuticals Purifying Cleanser ($34.00* at UW Health Transformations Jeune Skin Care) or Obagi Exfoliating Day Lotion with Glycolic Acid ($69.00*).

Growth Factors

Young, healthy skin has naturally occurring elements that provide great regenerative benefits. Growth factors are one of those elements. Growth factors work to stimulate collagen production and tissue repair.

Recommended products: SkinMedica's TNS Recovery Complex ($172.00* at UW Health Transformations Jeune Skin Care) has been the most effective and stable growth factor product available. Is your skin sensitive to alpha hydroxy acids or retinols? TNS Recovery Complex is excellent for those with sensitive skin. It does not exfoliate and actually helps to heal the skin. Benefits include reduction of the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, smoother skin texture and tone, and added elasticity.

Resveratrol

Resveratrol is a newer antioxidant that is derived from the knotweed plant and helps increase radiance, elasticity and density of the skin. Resveratrol helps sustain healthy longevity by neutralizing intracellular free radical damage and repairing the visible effects of age-accelerated skin. This nighttime anti-aging product boosts skin's own antioxidant defense system to help repair and prevent accumulated damage. Can be used in combination with a retinol or retinoid (layer over your retinoid).

Recommended product: SkinCeuticals offers an exceptional 1% Pure Resveratrol ($152.00* at UW Health Transformations Jeune Skin Care).

Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic Acid is a humectant that naturally occurs in the dermis. When hyaluronic acid is applied topically, it can attract and retain 1,000 times its own weight in water. It draws moisture in and prevents it from leaving, enhancing the benefits of your moisturizer. The skin will immediately feel smoother and have a greater suppleness to it.

Recommended product: SkinCeuticals Hydrating B5 Gel ($78.00* at UW Health Transformations Jeune Skin Care).

Retinols

Retinol is a form of vitamin A that works to rapidly exfoliate skin cells and promote collagen within the skin. Retinol is considered more "skin-friendly" than the prescription Retin A, meaning results can be just as good as Retin A but with less dryness and irritation. Retinols should be used in the evening. Also, because of their exfoliating properties, make sure to use a good broad spectrum sunscreen daily.

Recommended product: Use a medical-grade retinol, such as SkinMedica Retinols ($60.00-$90.00* - available in three strengths at UW Health Transformations).

Sunscreen

One of the most important anti-aging products is sunscreen! One of the No. 1 causes of premature aging is sun exposure. Get into the habit of applying sunscreen every day (if it's sunny or not). Look for a broad-spectrum sunscreen (both UVA/UVB block) that is SPF 15 or greater (unfortunately, your makeup doesn't count). Apply a specific sunscreen for the best protection and remember to reapply every 2 hours when you are outdoors.

Recommended products: UW Health Transformations has a variety of sunscreens for every skin type ($30.00-$56.00*).
