The Eyes Have It: Selecting an Eye Cream

I scream, you scream, we all scream for EYE cream!

The delicate eye skin of the eye area is one of the first places to show the signs of aging. The skin under the eye is as thin as an eggshell. Some individuals are bothered by dark circles and shadows, puffiness and under-eye bags, thin, crepe paper-like skin, fine lines, wrinkles, crow's feet and ptosis (sagging skin).

There are countless eye treatment products available on the market today. For some people, choosing one can be as confusing as trying to find the correct color in make-up foundation.

Here at UW Health Transformations, we offer four different eye creams:

SkinMedica TNS Eye Repair

(regular price: $98.00*; March 2016 sale price: $78.40*)

SkinMedica TNS Eye Repair incorporates vitamins, peptides and other key ingredients such as TNS, Tissue Nutrient Serum. This patented technology contains human growth factors, soluble collagen, antioxidants and matrix proteins, which help to:

  • Increase firmness and elasticity
  • Improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
  • Minimize dark circles

Other key ingredients, such as N-Hydroxysuccinimide, Chrysin and Boron Nitride, help release the trapped hemoglobin under the skin, which results in dark circles, and aid in the prevention of future dark shadows. This product has been seen on ABC's Good Morning America.

Revision Teamine Eye Complex

(regular price: $74.00*; March 2016 sale price: $59.20*)

Revision Teamine Eye Complex, with its scientifically advanced technology backed by years of intense research, provides three primary benefits:

  • Visibly diminishes dark under-eye circles
  • Reduces puffiness around the eyes
  • Smoothes fine lines and wrinkles

Formulated to work in multiple pathways, it is guaranteed to reduce the appearance of dark circles. Teamine contains powerful antioxidants for optimum anti-aging benefits, along with a peptide complex which has been shown to reduce the surface area of deep wrinkles up to 42 percent.

SkinCeuticals A.G.E. Eye Complex

(regular price: $92.00*; March 2016 sale price: $73.60*)

SkinCeuticals A.G.E. Eye Complex contains targeted ingredients such as optical diffusers, flavonoids and synergistic peptides, which immediately improve the appearance of dark circles and under-eye bags.

This product also contains blueberry extract, which interrupts the on-going process of glycation to help prevent advanced glycation end products (A.G.E.s), while keeping the skin supple and flexible. In addition, Proxylane helps restore the water and nutrient content to the skin, resulting in increased skin elasticity and thickness with reduced wrinkles and crow's feet.

SkinCeuticals Physical Eye UV Defense SPF 50

(regular price: $30.00*; March 2016 sale price: $24.00*)

Delivering a new standard in eye care, this ophthalmologist-tested sunscreen defends, enhances and optimizes the entire eye area, including the eye lid. Formulated specifically for the unique structure of the thinner and more sensitive skin around the eye, Physical Eye UV Defense provides broad spectrum SPF 50 protection without migrating into and irritating the eyes. A unifying tint enhances skin tone while ceramides nourish, creating a smooth, optimal canvas for make-up application. This sheer, universal tint is in a 100% mineral base that is suitable for all skin types. Intended for daytime use.

Do You Really Need an Eye Cream?

You may ask, "Can't I just use my regular moisturizer? Do I really need yet another step in my routine?"

The choice is yours. Although many individuals can get by without a separate eye cream, others may need a little more help. The older we get and the worse our signs of aging are definitely contributing factors. Many times our under eye "issues" are a result of something systemic happening in the body, such as water retention, possibly from too much dietary salt. This may appear as under-eye bags and puffiness. Sometimes it is just plain lack of sleep and burning the candle at both ends that contributes to dark circles and shadows. Discoloration in the eye lids and surrounding tissue could be a sign of sinus trouble and allergies.

And don't forget - the sun is the No. 1 cause of skin aging, followed by smoking.

No eye cream is going to completely reverse the signs of aging. If you want a quick fix, then injectables such as Botox and fillers, like Juvederm, may be better choices. They surely will help hide crow's feet and smile lines. Learn more about Botox and fillers at UW Health Transformations

You may have heard the phrase, "Your history shows on your face." Some of us choose to grow old gracefully and our laugh lines don't bother us. Others will fight it all the way. Eye creams and injectables can help.

In the end, laughing is a sign of happiness. So keep smiling…
