What is a hernia?
A hernia occurs when an internal organ or body part protrudes through the wall of muscle or tissue that normally contains it. Most hernias appear within the abdominal cavity (between the chest and hips) or in the groin.
Who is at risk?
Men: Hernias occur most frequently in men between ages 40-59
Women: Hernias are often deeper and smaller, so they may not cause a visible bulge
Common hernia symptoms
Abdominal or groin hernias
Noticeable lump or bulge that can be pushed back in or disappears when lying down
Swelling or bulge in the groin or scrotum
Increased pain at the site of the bulge
Pain while lifting
Bulge that increases in size over time
Dull aching sensation
Feeling of fullness or signs of bowel obstruction
Hiatal hernias
When the upper part of your stomach bulges through your diaphragm, you may experience:
Heartburn
Indigestion
Difficulty swallowing
Frequent regurgitation
Chest pain
No external bulge is visible with hiatal hernias
