Overview

Helping you achieve your ideal breast size and shape

Breast augmentation is surgery to enlarge the size of the breasts. It’s one of the most common plastic surgeries doctors perform.

Women consider this procedure for many reasons. For some, it can make their breasts more even, especially if they’ve had breast surgery for some other reason in the past. For others, breast augmentation may enhance their appearance. Other women are looking to restore their breasts to the way they looked before having children or aging.

At UW Health Transformations we understand the many reasons women consider breast surgery. Whatever your reason, we develop a treatment plan that’s best for you. Our expertise and experience will meet your needs and help you achieve natural-looking results.

About the treatment

What is breast augmentation?

Breast augmentation builds the size and/or shape of your breasts using implants placed inside your body. We offer silicone implants and inflatable implants filled with saltwater.

What is the cost?

The cost of your surgery depends on the type of implants that are used. We give you more details about costs during your initial consultation.

The treatment process

Look the way you’d like to look

If you have breast augmentation surgery, here’s what you can expect:

  1. 01.
    Come in for a consultation

You first talk with a doctor about your goals and expectations. We explain the surgery and answer your questions.

  2. 02.
    Have a pre-surgery evaluation

If you decide you want the surgery, you meet with our team so we can gather your medical history and physical information. We ask about your medications, current health and lifestyle.

  3. 03.
    Get ready for surgery

Your doctor will give you advice on the best way to prepare for surgery. This may include information on eating and drinking, medications and tobacco use. The doctor may also ask you to get a mammogram before surgery. Because you won’t be allowed to drive yourself home from surgery, you should arrange for transportation. You’ll also want to be sure you have someone available to stay with you for a day or two after surgery.

  4. 04.
    Have your surgery

Surgery is performed while you’re under general anesthesia. It usually takes 30 minutes to one hour. The surgeon will insert your implant through an incision in a discrete area. This might be under your armpit, around your nipple or under your breast. You can learn more about the surgery by watching these short animations:

  5. 05.
    Go easy as you recover

Right after surgery, you may have some soreness, swelling, bruising, tiredness and changes in how your nipple feels. Some people have nausea as well. Your doctor will advise you on how to manage these symptoms. If you have stitches, your doctor will remove them after a week or so. You can usually do light activities a few days after surgery and return to work within one to two weeks. Most people can start exercising after a month.

Surgery-related risks

All surgeries come with certain risks, but we take every precaution to keep you safe. For breast augmentation, risks include bleeding, infection and deflation of your breast implant. Some women also experience capsular contracture. This occurs when tissue gathers around your implant. It can make the implant feel hard and distort your breast. If these problems occur, we can treat them.
