2021 Diversity Summit examines the health of the Latinx community

Madison, Wis. — On Tuesday, experts will gather with members of the UW School of Medicine and Public Health (SMPH) for a virtual public event to discuss the health of the Latinx community at the third annual Diversity Summit.

The event, a collaboration this year with UW Health, will focus on driving forces that impact the well-being of the Latinx population in the context of COVID-19.

Factors that impact health are multifaceted, according to Dr. Patricia Téllez-Girón, associate professor, family medicine and community health, UW School of Medicine and Public Health, and a UW Health physician.

"Health is impacted by so many more things than just germs and viruses," she said. "Economics, education and many more factors weigh into the health of populations."

Téllez-Girón will give a general status update on the Latinx community at large, in advance of keynote speaker Dr. Elena Rios, president and chief executive officer, National Hispanic Medical Association, and president of the association's National Hispanic Health Foundation.
