Overview
About pleural disease
Pleural disease refers to an abnormal condition in the pleura, which is a large tissue membrane that wraps around the outside of your lungs and lines the inside of your chest cavity. The pleura has two thin layers. The area between these layers is the pleural space. Normally, a small amount of fluid moves around within this space and helps the lungs move easily as you breathe.
People with pleural disease typically experience symptoms such as shortness of breath, chest pain and unexplained, persistent cough; however, patients might not have symptoms in some cases.
