Reshaping your nose for appearance and function

Sometimes looking your best allows you to feel your best. Transformations at UW Health can help you do both.

We have a team of highly skilled plastic and cosmetic surgeons and other specialists. They offer many procedures to help you achieve your best look and function. One of these is rhinoplasty. You might know it better as nose surgery.

At Transformations, we provide the latest treatment options in private, comfortable surroundings. Whether you’re looking to improve the appearance of your nose or there’s a medical need for your surgery, we have the expertise to meet your needs.

What is rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is surgery to reshape your nose. The surgery is commonly done to:

  • Alter the shape of the tip or bridge of your nose

  • Change the angle between your nose and upper lip

  • Increase or decrease the size of your nose

  • Narrow the span of your nostrils

Doctors develop a treatment plan based on your specific needs.

Who is rhinoplasty for?

Rhinoplasty can be helpful if you have a birth defect of your nose or if your nose is crooked due to a fracture. Surgery also might help if you have certain types of breathing problems. In many cases, we work with people who are simply not happy with the natural shape or appearance of their nose.

The best candidates for surgery are healthy and psychologically stable. You should also have realistic goals regarding what surgery can do for you.

Treatment process

Your steps to a new nose

Surgery is customized to your needs. But each person goes through a similar process:

  1. Meet with a doctor. This is your chance to talk about your expectations and learn about your desired procedure. If your procedure is considered medically necessary, we bill your insurance for this visit. Co-pays and deductibles apply. If your procedure is for cosmetic reasons, your initial consult is free.

  2. Receive a pre-surgery evaluation. If you decide to proceed, we schedule a visit to do a physical exam and discuss your medical history. We also go over your current medications. You’ll be able to ask any questions you might have. We continue discussions about your procedure and desired results as well.

  3. Prepare for surgery. Your doctor will give you instructions to help you get ready for your operation. There will be guidelines about eating, drinking and smoking. The doctor will provide instructions regarding medications and supplements. You won’t be able to drive right after your surgery, so you should arrange for someone to get you home.

  4. Have your operation.

  5. Recover at home. After surgery, it’s best to stay in bed with your head elevated for a day or two. You’re likely to have some temporary swelling, bruising and pain. Your recovery time depends on what surgery you have done. In most cases, you can return to work one to two weeks after surgery. It will be a bit longer before you can resume strenuous activities.
