James Gern, MD, is a UW Health Kids pediatric allergist and immunologist and a professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. Dr. Gern cares for children with allergic skin diseases such as atopic dermatitis (very dry and itchy skin), food allergies, respiratory allergies and asthma. As an immunologist, he also provides care for kids with immune system conditions who have more frequent infections than they should. Dr. Gern’s areas of interest include childhood allergies, asthma, food allergies and immune system deficiency. He went into health care because he’s always loved science and helping people. He finds his job rewarding because it allows him to really delve into science and into the best ways to help his patients stay healthy. Dr. Gern conducts research focused on understanding why children develop allergy-related diseases and asthma. He’s interested in respiratory viruses that cause wheezing illnesses, coughs and colds. Outside of work, Dr. Gern enjoys being outdoors, canoeing and wilderness camping. I love watching my patients grow up less burdened with allergies and see where their lives lead them.
