Deepak Gopal, MD, is a gastroenterologist (digestive system doctor) at UW Health. He treats cancerous and benign esophageal and gastrointestinal (GI) tract conditions. These include GERD (acid reflux), Barrett's esophagus (precancerous lesions), pancreatitis (inflammation), pancreatic cancer, small bowel bleeding and other disorders.
Dr. Gopal offers a variety of diagnostic and treatment options, including minimally invasive endoscopy. This involves inserting a flexible tube or scope into the esophagus to look for lesions or other problems.
Dr. Gopal performs specialized endoscopic enteroscopy to examine the stomach and small intestine. He also provides colonoscopies and polyp removal. Through these and other procedures, Dr. Gopal diagnoses pancreatic, rectal and esophageal cancers.
As vice chair for Quality and Patient Safety, Dr. Gopal enhances care throughout UW Health. He is also a professor at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, Department of Medicine, Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology where he also serves as endoscopy chief. Dr. Gopal has a research interest in advanced interventional endoscopy, innovative technologies and quality and safety in medicine.
In his free time, he travels and enjoys family time, long walks and movies.

Dr. Deepak Gopal's research interests includes Barrett’s esophagus, EUS (endoscopic ultrasound), capsule endoscopy, therapeutic gastrointestinal endoscopy, endoscopic management of gastrointestinal malignancies and colorectal cancer imaging and screening.
