Charles Heise, MD, FACS

Charles Heise, MD, FACS, is a UW Health colorectal surgeon. He specializes in treating conditions that affect the colon, rectum and anus. Dr. Heise is also a professor at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, where he is involved in research and education, helping to train future surgeons through the Department of Surgery’s fellowship program.

Dr. Heise cares for patients with a wide range of conditions, including hemorrhoids, fissures, inflammatory bowel diseases like Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis and colorectal cancer. He enjoys treating all types of colorectal issues and does not limit his practice to one area. He is also working with engineering experts to develop microlens systems that could improve laparoscopic surgery in the future.

Dr. Heise believes that patients should be the center of care. He takes time to listen, explain options and make sure each person feels informed and supported. He works closely with other specialists to provide a team-based approach and helps patients make decisions that are right for them. He understands that surgery can be emotional and aims to ease anxiety by being honest and caring.

Outside of work, Dr. Heise enjoys spending time outdoors year-round. He likes fishing, biking, and being active. He also follows sports teams, especially the Wisconsin Badgers and Kansas teams. His love for nature and sports helps him stay balanced and connected to his community.

Listening to the patient is very important. I want them to walk away from our visit feeling informed, supported and confident in their care.
