Specimen Collection, Container Types and Processing

The quality of laboratory results depends greatly upon the quality of the specimen submitted for testing. Specific collection instructions for individual tests appear in the UW Hospital and Clinics Clinical Laboratories Test Directory. Please refer to this information to ensure proper collection.

The Test Directory details the following information for each test:
  • Test components – all major analytes included in a test order
  • Methodology
  • Clinical significance
  • Notification if testing is sent out to an approved reference laboratory
  • Days performed
  • Turnaround time and stat availability
  • Acceptable specimen types, including body fluids
  • Patient preparation
  • Collection instructions
  • Notice to contact Referral Office when medical review is required prior to specimen collection
  • Preferred and alternate containers
  • Collection volume – preferred and for pediatric patients
  • Specimen processing and transport
  • Unacceptable criteria
  • Reference ranges or expected results where applicable
