During your stay at UW Health Rehabilitation Hospital in Madison, Wisconsin, you will need only a few personal items.


We strongly urge that you leave all valuables at home. If this is not possible, you may deposit such items in the hospital's safe place. Under no circumstances will the hospital be responsible for money or valuables kept in your room. Also, no electrical appliances may be brought into this facility without prior approval.


Clothing and Personal Items


Clothing worn during your stay, which may require laundering, should be sent home to be washed and replacement clothing will be needed. We suggest having one week's supply of clothing at the Rehabilitation Hospital. In addition, please bring the following items upon admission:

  • Insurance cards
  • Health Care Power of Attorney (HCPOA)
  • Living Will
  • Durable Power of Attorney (DPOA)
  • Advanced Directives
  • Pants/shorts
  • Shirts/blouses
  • Undergarments
  • Socks
  • Slippers with non-slip soles
  • Outdoor jacket/sweater
  • One pair of comfortable walking shoes (Velcro tennis shoes, or supportive slip on shoes). Athletic shoes or shoes with non-slip soles are fine. If ankle or foot braces are to be used, see your physical therapist before buying shoes.
  • Pajamas (hospital gowns and pants are available if needed)
  • If needed:
    • Hearing aids and extra batteries
    • Eyeglasses and/or contact lenses
    • Dentures

Optional Items

  • Walker, cane, or wheelchair (the hospital has these, but you may prefer to use personal items; your physical therapist will assess what device meets your current needs, and adjust that item to fit you properly)
  • Razor and shaving cream
  • Cosmetics
  • Toiletries (toothpaste, brush, deodorant, soap, comb/brush)

Please inform hospital staff if you bring the following items. Maintenance staff is required to check all personal electrical equipment for safety prior to them being approved for use. Examples include:

  • Electric razors
  • Radios/ear phones
  • Hair dryers
