Reuniting After 25 Years: Pediatric Cancer Patient and Care Team

When Heather McKay was 13 years old, she was given less than two years to live. That was 25 years ago. Heather had chronic myelogenous leukemia, a very rare form of cancer. At the time her pediatric oncologist, Dr. Paul Sondel, recommended a bone marrow transplant. Her chances of surviving were 60 percent. Now, 25 years later, Heather is a speech language therapist and working to make a difference in her students' lives. She recently returned to American Family Children's Hospital to reunite with Dr. Sondel and her nurse, Marykay Brekke.
