Tips from our Jeune Skin Care medical aestheticians:

We all know the importance of wearing an SPF daily to help protect us from dangerous UV rays. But what else is in our environment causing damage to our skin and bodies?

Free radicals. What are they? How much damage are they doing, and can it be reversed? What do we need to know to keep ourselves protected?

The Science

In short, free radicals are molecules that react negatively with other cellular structures causing damage to our cells. Some examples of free radicals include:

  • Cigarette smoke
  • Pollution
  • Drugs/medications
  • Toxic metals
  • Radiation
  • Industrial chemicals
  • Pesticides
  • Alcohol

Some of these things we can avoid, but others remain in our environment for our bodies to absorb.

What does this all do to your health and your skin?

Because free radicals break down the cells over time, it speeds up the aging process. As our bodies age, we begin to lose the ability to fight these effects.

Numerous studies have shown free radical damage to be connected to central nervous system diseases, cardiovascular disease, autoimmune and inflammatory disorders, just to name a few, as well as age related changes to our bodies.

Changes in appearance from free radical damage include:

  • Loss of elasticity
  • Wrinkles
  • Change in skin tone and texture
  • Hair changes, like graying

What can you do to protect yourself?

To protect our bodies, we should eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables - they are great sources of antioxidants. A healthy diet including these - along with staying hydrated and getting plenty of exercise - can actually help fight free radical damage.

Antioxidant supplements also exist, but it is recommended you speak to your doctor. There are always contraindications and risks and there is such a thing as too many antioxidants.

Antioxidants are commonly found in an array of skin care products. From newly researched special extracts to the "good old" vitamins like A, C and E, these free radical scavengers have a list of benefits for our skin.
