Denis Carey's Hip Replacement Surgery

Denis Carey underwent hip surgery at UW Hospital and Clinics. Here's his story.
Hip surgery can be daunting. However my recent experience at UW Hospital with Dr. Illgen was exceptionally successful.
Every aspect of my care from admission to the surgery to discharge was performed with skill and personal consideration. The post-operative pain medication was very adequate to keep me comfortable and the epidural anesthesia contributed to a quick and easy recovery.
While in the hospital I used a walker for my therapy, but three days later at the rehab center I no longer needed the walker and merely used a cane, never needing crutches.
By the time I returned home, 8 days post surgery, I no longer needed the narcotic pain medication and took my normal arthritis med to stay comfortable.
Within another week I was walking without my cane and at this time, five weeks post-op, I seldom even think about my hip. I believe the skill of the surgeon and the robotic assisted surgery are responsible for my speedy comfortable recovery and excellent result. I hope to avoid any surgery in the future, but if it's necessary I will feel comfortable returning to UW Hospital for the procedure.
