Michael Matthews, DO, is a UW Health internal medicine doctor. He’s also a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health.
Dr. Matthews provides primary care for adults with a range of health concerns. He treats conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure and osteoporosis (brittle bones). He also helps people manage mental health conditions.
Dr. Matthews also treats patients with musculoskeletal (bone, muscle and joint) conditions. These range from sports injuries like ACL tears and concussions to other traumas, including tendinitis, arthritis and joint sprains. He offers joint injections and osteopathic manipulative therapy, a hands-on treatment that relieves pain and improves movement.
A holistic provider, Dr. Matthews combines traditional medicine with positive lifestyle changes to help people improve their health. He develops long-lasting, productive relationships with his patients. He guides patients through challenging medical problems and celebrates with them when they achieve their health goals.
Dr. Matthews researches new technology to help astronauts perform ultrasound-guided medical procedures during space missions.
Outside of work, Dr. Matthews enjoys weightlifting, golfing, participating in triathlon activities and walking with his wife and dog. He also plays the guitar and drums.
My hope for each patient is that they feel heard, supported and in control of their care. I want them to leave their visit confident in their next steps — knowing they’re the pilot and I’m here to help guide the way.
