Michael Houghan, MD, is a UW Health internal medicine doctor. He’s also an assistant professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health.
Dr. Houghan sees adults with a wide range of health issues, including acute (sudden-onset) conditions like sinus infections. He performs minor procedures in the clinic, such as skin biopsies and joint injections.
Dr. Houghan also focuses on preventive care. He helps patients prevent chronic (long-term) conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, high cholesterol and kidney disease. His goal is to keep his patients happy and healthy as long as possible.
For Dr. Houghan, medicine is about building relationships. He works one-on-one with patients to understand their needs and values. Together, they set expectations to design a care plan and achieve shared goals.
In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Houghan teaches medical residents how to use point-of-care ultrasounds in outpatient settings. He’s researching how this approach can help providers investigate health issues and find answers faster.
In his free time, Dr. Houghan is an avid tennis player and spectator. He also enjoys working on crossword puzzles, watching movies and spending time with family.
Patients can think of me as their quarterback: My team and I have the expertise to help them reach their goals. I love being that person they can rely upon.
