About

Micah Long, MD, is a critical care anesthesiologist at UW Health and an associate professor in the Departments of Anesthesiology and Medicine at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. Dr. Long provides care for patients undergoing surgery in the operating room, as well as for those who are critically ill and require support in the Trauma and Life Support Center (TLC) or other University Hospital intensive care units.

In the ICU, Dr. Long uses advanced medications and technologies to support the body when the patient’s organs cannot do the job. These include things like mechanical ventilation for the lungs, dialysis for the kidneys and other heart and lung support devices, like extracorporeal membrane oxygenator support (ECMO).

If a patient needs surgery, Dr. Long uses state-of-the-art sedation, anesthesia and pain management techniques to provide safe care and comfort before, during and after the procedure.

Dr. Long’s clinical interests include helping people breathe comfortably when they are on a ventilator, as well as providing leadership during emergency situations when special techniques are needed to restart a person’s breathing or heartbeat. Dr. Long is passionate about managing shock and is an expert in point-of-care ultrasonography and echocardiography to manage heart and lung dysfunction.

I am constantly working to stay up to date and at the cutting edge to make sure my patients get the best care possible. I immensely value the human side of medicine and the personal time spent communicating with patients and their families.
