Maryl R. Johnson, MD, FACC

About

Maryl Johnson, MD, FACC is a heart failure transplant cardiologist at UW Health and a professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. She sees patients with advanced heart disease and heart failure, including those who have received treatment but continue to have significant symptoms.

Dr. Johnson works with patients to identify medications that may alleviate their symptoms. She also cares for people who need a heart transplant or an implanted pump, like a left ventricular assist device (LVAD), to help their heart do its job.

Medical technology was Dr. Johnson’s original career choice, but a college advisor quickly recognized her leadership qualities and guided her toward medicine. This leadership led Dr. Johnson to the critical role she played in bringing a heart transplant program to UW Health.

Thinking of each patient as an individual is at the foundation of Dr.Johnson’s care philosophy. She listens and learns more about each person she treats so she can recommend a plan that best meets their needs and goals.

Dr. Johnsons an active researcher, studying treatments for heart failure, including the use of LVADs.

Knowing how important exercise is for heart health, Dr. Johnson makes time for the gym. She also enjoys cooking, traveling, attending the symphony, opera and ballet.

Different patients have different goals. I think it's critically important for patients — and not only patients, but also their families — to be involved in the decision-making process. My hope for each of the patients I see is that they can go on to improve their quality of life.
