About

John McCartney, MD, is a UW Health pulmonary and critical care medicine doctor and a clinical professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. He offers clinical and in-hospital care for patients with a variety of lung conditions.

From minor issues to lifelong disorders, Dr. McCartney provides the full spectrum of pulmonary (lung) care. He sees patients for respiratory (breathing) conditions ranging from asthma and COPD — chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (blocked airways) — to pulmonary fibrosis (lung scarring) and other critical pulmonary disorders. He specializes in interstitial lung diseases, which are disorders that cause progressive scarring of the lungs.

With over 20 years of experience, Dr. McCartney excels at helping patients navigate challenging diagnoses. He is dedicated to active listening and shared decision-making and partners with patients to find treatments that align with their goals. He enjoys helping his patients manage their conditions and get back to enjoying their lives to the fullest degree.

In addition to his clinical work, Dr. McCartney serves as the pulmonary and critical care fellowship program director.

Outside of work, Dr. McCartney enjoys golfing, biking and cheering for his kids at swim meets.

I strive to help my patients achieve their goals and improve their quality of life.
