James Leonard, DO, PT, is a UW Health doctor who specializes in physical medicine and rehabilitation. He diagnoses and treats patients with disabilities, focusing on restoring function after injuries to muscle, bone, soft tissue or the nervous system. He is also an associate professor in the Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. Dr. Leonard’s specialties include neck and back pain management, as well as sports injuries and work-related injuries. He’s part of a team of orthopedic spine surgeons and other specialists who work in a dedicated spinal care clinic. Dr. Leonard manages injury-related pain, post-operative pain and chronic (ongoing) spinal pain. His patient-centered approach to care includes listening to patients’ concerns and treatment goals. He takes time to educate them about a variety of treatment approaches and options. He provides long-term follow-up care to evaluate progress. His goal is to help patients take a proactive role in their spinal health and pain management. Outside of work, he enjoys weightlifting, biking and spending warm summer days on the river or lake. I think the biggest thing we give our patients is hope. I help define the problem and offer options to help patients ease pain and take control of their health.
