About

Erik Ranheim, MD, is a UW Health pathologist who specializes in hematopatholgy (the study of diseases of the cells that make up our blood). Dr. Ranheim is also a professor and chair of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health.

Dr. Ranheim diagnoses cancerous and noncancerous conditions of the blood, bone marrow and immune system. These include lymphoma, leukemia and sickle cell anemia.

As part of a multispecialty team, Dr. Ranheim helps direct therapies through accurate diagnosis. He uses genetic analysis, flow cytometry (assessing the proteins on individual cells) and other advanced diagnostic tools and techniques.

Dr. Ranheim combines his scientific expertise with a desire to help others at UW Health and throughout the community. he and his wife developed a health care program for people experiencing homelessness in the Madison area. Dr. Ranheim also researches immunology and cancer, including melanoma and blood cancers.

Dr. Ranheim spends his free time restoring prairie lands. He and his wife also enjoy beekeeping, gardening, blacksmithing and woodworking.

In recent years, we have seen tremendous progress in immune system therapies. Every day, therapies like these are helping patients to survive and beat cancer.
