About

David Melnick, MD, MPH, FACS, is a UW Health general surgeon and a faculty member in the Department of Surgery at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. He performs a wide variety of elective and emergency surgeries.

Dr. Melnick consults with patients who have abdominal organ conditions, wounds and skin lesions they elect to treat surgically. He also performs emergency surgery for patients admitted to the hospital for critical conditions such as appendicitis (blocked, infected appendix), cholecystitis (inflammation of the gall bladder) and urgent gynecological conditions affecting the female reproductive organs. He is skilled in a range of traditional, minimally invasive and noninvasive surgical techniques.

Dr. Melnick understands the uncertainty and anxiety patients might feel when faced with surgery. He uses plain language and drawings to explain conditions and procedures so patients fully understand their surgery and course of treatment.

Dr. Melnick also puts a strong focus on postoperative care and pain relief. Whenever possible, he uses minimally invasive procedures to improve recovery outcomes and reduce the chance of complications.

Outside of the clinic, Dr. Melnick enjoys playing electric bass in a jazz band.

My hope for my patients is that they have a good outcome after their operation.
