Epilepsy Monitoring Unit

Ask your doctor to call (608) 890-6500 to refer your child to UW Health's Pediatric Epilepsy program.

Our Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU) located at American Family Children's Hospital is staffed by an experienced and specially trained team of nurses and nurse practitioners in a family and child-friendly environment.

Doctors often admit patients to the EMU for extended video EEG recording. This is a test that records brain waves. It helps determine a child’s risk for epilepsy, understand whether movements or behaviors are related to seizures and identify which parts of the brain are involved in seizures. You may stay for one night or several depending on the doctor’s instructions. A follow-up appointment and treatment plan will be determined by your child’s Neurologist.
