Aspirus Wausau Hospital Honors Donors
The team at Aspirus Wausau Hospital hosted a donor remembrance ceremony on Sunday, May 19, 2013 at the R.W. Monk Botanical Gardens in Wausau. The ceremony was held to honor 13 organ donors from the hospital who made the selfless decision to give the gift of life.
On that sunny Sunday, more than 60 people attended the event. Donor family members, recipients and their families, and a host of community members and leaders attended. Donor families were invited to place dirt around the tree that was planted as a memorial to organ donors from around the world. In addition, each of the 13 local donor families planted a fern to honor their loved one.
The ceremony included speakers Chaplain Christine Sullivan, who read a beautiful poem. Lee Belmus , a liver transplant recipient, shared his transplant experience and expressed his immense gratitude to each donor and their family. The ceremony continued with musical selections from the Trinity Lutheran College, highlighted by an original song that incorporated each of the donor’s names.
The Aspirus Wausau team hopes that this event will be the first of many to honor donors, and that the garden will be highlighted with beautiful dedications to organ donors.
