Title Nurse-Led Parent Educational Discharge Support Strategies (PEDSS) for Children Newly Diagnosed with Cancer

Objective
After your child is discharged from the hospital, you will be caring for him/her at home. Parents have told us that they are overwhelmed with information received in the hospital and want concise information on how to care for their child at home. A parent education discharge support strategy (PEDSS) was created for parents of children newly diagnosed with cancer. The support strategy consists of information on common symptoms and what you can do to decrease the symptoms. The purpose of this study is to evaluate how effective the strategy is for you and your child

Key Eligibility
  • Inclusion criteria for the study include a parent (referred to as “parent” in this proposal and includes a parent or legal guardian) of a patient age 3 to 17 years of age who is newly diagnosed with any type of malignant disease on an inpatient oncology unit. The parent must be at least 18 years of age to ensure the age of majority across all participating sites to legally consent their child. The parent will need to speak English, Spanish, or Arabic due to the interventions and questionnaires available only in those languages. Caregivers that are illiterate will be excluded from this study due to the inability to complete the questionnaires. Parents of children younger than 3 years of age will not be eligible for the study because some symptoms, such as nausea and sleep indicators, are difficult to quantify in infants and symptom interventions differ in children less than 3 years of age.
