Title
Patient-related Barriers to Pain Management: Revisiting the Pain Barriers Questionnaire
Objective
The purpose of this study is to find out if patient-related barriers to cancer pain management have increased over the last 20 years. Researchers will also examine if pain severity, pain medication prescriptions, and pain medication use have changed over the last 20 years.
Treatment
You will be asked to complete two questionnaires that measure your attitudes toward treatment of pain and how pain affects you on a daily basis.
Description
The study involves one visit over approximately 1 to 2 hours.
Key Eligibility
- Age 18 years old or greater
- Recurrent or metastatic cancer
- Speak and read English at or above a grade 5 level (per patient or caregiver report)
- Capable to complete questionnaires on their own
- Patients regardless of race and/or sex are eligible to participate
- Patients who have had surgery within the last 30 days prior to enrollment are ineligible
- Patients who are not managing their own pain medications (i.e., those who are hospitalized or living in a long term care facility) are excluded. People living in assisted living environments are not excluded
