Maternal Fetal Medicine (Perinatology)
As Madison's largest and most comprehensive team of perinatal specialists, UW Health perinatology offers a complete team of caregivers, including physicians specializing in maternal-fetal medicine and reproductive genetics, genetic counselors, ultrasonographers, nurse clinicians, a diabetic nurse educator, dietitians, social workers and pastoral care providers.
Additionally we work closely with pediatric specialists (surgeons, intensive care specialists and cardiologists) that may be needed in the after birth care of certain children with special needs. Working as a team, each member of our perinatal service contributes his or her expertise to improving each woman's chances of having a successful pregnancy and taking home a healthy infant.
UW Health perinatologists provide obstetrical care and consultation for pregnant women who have a variety of pregnancy related concerns including:
- Chronic medical conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, asthma, organ transplants, kidney or heart disease
- Complications in a previous pregnancy such as fetal growth disturbance, birth defects, fetal loss or pregnancy related hypertension
- Risky fetal conditions such as multiples, and a variety of treatable fetal conditions
- Abnormal genetic screening tests or pregnancy later in life
