MADISON - After a rigorous review, University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics and American Family Children's Hospital has been reverified as a Level I Trauma Center by the American College of Surgeons (ACS).
UW Hospital and American Family Children's Hospital were verified Level I for both adult and pediatric trauma care. No other Wisconsin hospital is verified for both.
"The Level I distinction represents our strong commitment to the community by providing immediate availability of trauma surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses and specialists," said Donna Katen-Bahensky, UW Hospital president and CEO.
To be a Level I center, the hospital must meet and follow more than 60 criteria. For example, the hospital must have a dedicated general surgeon in the trauma center and a full spectrum of surgical specialists who can respond quickly. Trauma centers must be reverified every three years.
UW Hospital and Clinics is also an ACS-verified burn center, which requires that attending staff surgeons have expertise in burn treatment.
