Human brainMADISON - UW Hospital and Clinics will receive the American Stroke Association’s "Get with the Guidelines" Silver Performance Achievement Award in February at the International Stroke Conference in New Orleans.
The award recognizes that UW Hospital consistently complied, for at least one year, with the guidelines program's requirements, including aggressive use of particular medications (tPA, anti-thrombotics, cholesterol-reducing drugs, etc.) and smoking cessation.
UW Hospital has gone beyond the requirements of the award, however. It has developed a comprehensive system for rapid diagnosis and treatment of stroke patients admitted to the emergency department.
This includes always being equipped to provide high-tech brain-imaging scans; having stroke neurologists available at all times to evaluate patients; providing access to neurosurgical and neuro-endovascular treatment and maintaining a dedicated neuroscience ICU.
According to the American Stroke Association, each year approximately 700,000 people suffer a stroke: 500,000 are first attacks and 200,000 are recurrent.
