UW Hospital and Clinics Announces New General Counsel

MADISON - James C. Dechene has been named senior vice president and general counsel at University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics.

Dechene is a partner at Sidley Austin LLP in Chicago, a firm he joined in 1980 and where he has specialized in health law since 1986. His legal practice at Sidley has encompassed health care issues including third-party reimbursement, joint ventures, corporate audit, fraud and abuse, and regulatory compliance.

"Jim brings a wealth of health care legal experience that is particularly of note during increasingly complex times in American health care," said Donna Katen-Bahensky, UW Hospital president and CEO. "We look forward to him joining our leadership team."

Listed among the Best Lawyers in America, Dechene has also served since 1987 as adjunct professor of law at the DePaul University College of Law. Within the college's Health Law Institute, he developed and taught courses on health care reimbursement and delivery systems as well as health care fraud and abuse and issues related to Stark regulations.

A graduate of Santa Clara University in California, Dechene also earned master's and doctoral degrees in economics and a law degree from the University of Michigan. He is the author of dozens of publications including books, book chapters and numerous articles on health care law.

He is expected to begin at the hospital Sept. 1.

UW Hospital is also pleased to announce that Kelly Wilson, who has served as interim vice president and general counsel, will assume a new role as vice president and deputy general counsel.
