Madison, Wis. — With COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations at an all-time high in Wisconsin, UW Health is implementing new parts of our emergency surge plan to enable the health system to best care for patients and protect both patients and staff.
Changes include primary care appointment evaluation, a free flu vaccine clinic for uninsured adults and newly designated respiratory clinic sites.
This week, UW Health began evaluating some primary care appointments that can potentially be postponed until the spring of 2021, when we will hopefully see a decrease in COVID-19 cases. This might involve asking patients to reschedule for a later date or offering them another option such as scheduled video visits.
These changes are designed to help UW Health handle the volume of COVID-19 patients and the arrival of respiratory care season while also determining which ambulatory appointments can take place virtually or at a later time.
Patients experiencing respiratory symptoms should first call their primary care provider clinic. A nurse will help patients determine if they need to be tested for COVID-19, need a video visit or need to be seen by a provider in person.
If an in-person appointment with a provider is needed, that patient will be scheduled at one of six designated respiratory care sites: Belleville, Stoughton, Fort Atkinson, Portage, West Towne Urgent Care or Union Corners Urgent Care. It is important to note that patients will not be able to schedule these appointments themselves online, they must first call their primary care clinic.
UW Health care providers urge community members to continue to socially distance, wear a mask and to get a flu vaccine if they have not already done so. For adults who do not have health insurance, UW Health is offering a free flu vaccine clinic on Dec. 12 and 19 from 8:30am to 4pm at the Union Corners Clinic. No appointment is necessary.
